IFA 2015 is now happening in Berlin, Germany, and Sony is one of the manufacturers to lift the lid on a new device at the trade show. The device that made its official debut is the much awaited Sony XPERIA Z5, the Japanese firm’s new flagship.
Sony XPERIA Z5 now official
The Sony XPERIA Z5 looks a like like its predecessor, the XPERIA Z3 Plus/Z4, meaning it still features Sony’s OmniBalance design. Found on the metal frame are hardware buttons that are synonymous to Sony. These include the camera shutter key, the volume rocker, and the power button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner. Like Sony’s previous flagship, the Z5 is IP65/68, which means the smartphone is waterproof.
Those who were expecting the Sony XPERIA Z5 to come with a QHD screen (1440 x 2560 pixel-resolution), we’re sorry to tell you that you will be disappointed. The smartphone comes with a 5.2-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels (FHD). This works out to a pixel density of 423 ppi.
Under the hood is a a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core processor with four cores clocked at 2 GHz, four cores clocked at 1.5 GHz, and an Adreno 430 GPU, coupled with 3 GB of RAM. We’re hoping that Sony has solved the overheating issue caused by the said CPU, which has caused the XPERIA Z3 Plus/Z4 to overheat and crash.
It’s camera combo consists of a 23-megapixel rear-facing camera with Sony’s 1/2.3″ Exmor RS sensor and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with an Exmor R sensor and a wide-angle 25 mm lens. The front-facing snapper on the Sony XPERIA Z5 comes with the world’s fastest autofocus, which can focus in just 0.03 seconds. Other main camera features include 5x Clear Image Zoom, up to ISO12800 for photos and ISO3200 for videos, improved Steady Shot features, and 4K video recording.
Other specs include 32 GB of internal storage and a 2,900 mAh battery that allegedly offers as much as two days of battery life. If you are in need of extra storage space, there is no need to worry. The Sony XPERIA Z5 comes with a microSD card slot.
The Sony XPERIA Z5 runs Android 5.1 (Lollipop) out of the box with Sony’s XPERIA UI slapped on top.
Sadly, pricing and availability is yet to be determined, but we’re sure to know about these details in the coming weeks.
