According to a report, LG is planning to lift the lid on the follow-up to the LG G Watch R (shown below), unsurprisingly called the LG G Watch R2. The smartwatch is said to sport LTE connectivity.
This is according to Business Korea. It reports, ” LG Electronics is going to unveil its 4G smart watch, tentatively named the G Watch R2, next year.”
Currently, the only smartwatch that can connect to the internet independently is the Samsung Gear S, which sports its own SIM card slot. However, it supports 3G connectivity and not 4G connectivity.
According to the site’s “industry sources,” the LG G Watch R2 will support LTE connectivity and will make its debut at MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2015, which kicks off in Barcelona, Spain in February of 2015 (just a few months away).
Aside from allowing you to connect to a 3G network for data, the Samsung Gear S allows you to make and receive calls without having to pair with a smartphone. The report does say that the LG G Watch R2 will allow users to enjoy more from 4G data, but it is still unclear whether the wearable will allow users to make or receive calls.
We’ll just have to wait and see.
