John Chen, BlackBerry CEO, once said that the Canadian phone maker is considering no longer making smartphones and instead focus on software if the new BlackBerry Priv slider tuns out to be a flop. It seems, however, that the first Android-powered smartphone made by BlackBerry is selling exceptionally well, as is has been sold out in the the biggest retailer in the world in terms of both revenue and number of employees.
Sold out at Walmart
The news comes to us courtesy of Bloomberg. It reports that the BlackBerry Priv is currently sold out at Walmart. Sadly, the report failed to mention exact figures. Despite this, unless Walmart only sold the smartphone in limited quantities, this is a sign that the device is selling well. As soon as the news broke out, it seems investors are satisfied, as BlackBerry shares are up 10%.
To recap, the BlackBerry Priv features 5.4-inch screen with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels (Quad HD). This works out to a pixel density of 540 ppi. Under the chassis slides out a physical QWERTY keyboard. It also comes with a virtual keyboard. Under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 64-bit hexa-core processor (two cores clocked at 1.8 GHz, four cores clocked at 1.44 GHz, and an Adreno 418 GPU to handle graphics), coupled with 3 GB of RAM. For your photography needs, the Priv features an 18-megapixel Schneider-Kreuznach rear-facing camera with optical image stabilisation that can record 4K videos. A 2-megapixel front-facing camera is in charge of snapping selfies and video chat. 32 GB of internal storage is on board, but, if this isn’t enough, the Priv does support microSD cards (as much as 2 TB). Keeping the lights on is a colossal 3,410 mAh battery that offers 22.5 hours of battery life (mixed use).
The BlackBerry Priv offers a new security system called DTEK. It is an early warning system that alerts you if your privacy has been compromised. Not only does the system monitor your smartphone, it also alerts you when you are at risk. Lastly, it offers suggestions on how to make your smartphone more secure.
The BlackBerry Priv (SIM free) is available from BlackBerry UK for £559.00 (VAT included).
