It seems that Sony will be lifting the lid on new devices at CES 2016, which kicks off in Las Vegas in January of next year. One of these devices will be a powerful smartphone. No, it is less likely to be the XPERIA Z6.
The invitation you see above was sent to PhoneArena. It reveals that Sony’s CES 2016 press conference will kick off on the 5th of January at 5 pm Pacific time in the Las Vegas Convention Center, which is the usual venue of the annual CES convention. The invite also shows VR headsets, hi-fi gear, a CyberShot camera, an extremely slim TV, and of course – a smartphone.
There are a number of reports that speculate that the smartphone shown in the invite is the Sony XPERIA Z6 – Sony’s next flagship. However, the device in the image isn’t likely to be the XPERIA Z6, since the new Sony XPERIA Z5 trio have just been officially unveiled a few months ago, specifically in September, and launched soon after. Furthermore, if the Z6 were to make its official debut in January and launch soon after, this would kill the sales of the Z5 series.
Since Sony is less likely to lift the lid on the XPERIA Z6 at CES 2016, what is expected to make its official debut at the trade show? PhoneArena suggests that the smartphone to make its official debut at CES 2016 will be the XPERIA Z5 Ultra, which makes a lot of sense, since the said device has been rumoured to ship in March of next year.
So what will Sony’s new smartphone have under the hood? Although the invite doesn’t reveal if its new smartphone will be a powerful device, since the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC will be available at that time and since various manufacturers are likely to introduce new smartphones that feature the CPU, we’re guessing Sony new XPERIA smartphone will do the same.
As for the rest of the Sony XPERIA Z5 Ultra’s specs, the device is rumoured to feature a 6.44-inch screen with a resolution of 2160 x 3840 pixels (4K). Like we mentioned earlier, it is expected to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 SoC under the hood. Coupled with that powerful processor is 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. Lastly, it is expected to rock a 23-megapixel rear-facing camera and a large-capacity battery.
