Samsung to invest £2.34 billion in new OLED production line – could be for Galaxy S6 Edge screens

Thanks to a flood of leaks found all over the internet, we know that Samsung is cooking up an edged version of the Samsung Galaxy S6 called the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. According to a new report, Samsung is planning to invest around £2.34 billion in a new OLED production line. It is believed that this new facility will roll out screens for the S6 Edge.

The news comes to us courtesy of Reuters. It reports, “South Korea’s Samsung Display plans to invest 4 trillion won ($3.6 billion) into making organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels as parent Samsung Electronics Co Ltd looks to boost components sales to offset weaker smartphone earnings.

“A Samsung Display spokesman told Reuters on Wednesday the new production line would mainly make medium and small-sized OLED displays for consumer electronics devices like smartphones and tablets. The investment would be made from 2015 to 2017, he added, without giving further details.”

The report adds that the new production line will initially roll out curved panels “like those on the Galaxy Note Edge.” We’re guessing these curved panels will be for the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
