Microsoft offering Chinese workers free Nokia Lumia 630 handsets if they voluntarily resign

According to a report from Marketwatch, Microsoft is giving away 300 units of the Nokia Lumia 630 a day to employees in its Nokia handset factory and R&D facility in Beijing, China. So what’s the catch? The employees have to voluntarily resign.

Microsoft is planning to cut around 4,700 jobs in these two China-based facilities. To try and ease the pain of unemployment, the software giant told employees via internal email that if they applied for the company’s “volunteer resignation package” they would get the phone for free. Microsoft added that the phones would be given to employees who resign voluntarily on a “first come, first serve” basis.

The 4,700 job cuts in China are part of Microsoft’s plan to cut 18,000 jobs in its offices around the world, mostly from its acquired Nokia Devices & Services unit.
