The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are currently available in China, but the handsets are much cheaper in Hong Kong, since import taxes in Hong Kong are lower. Apple’s iPhones are immensely popular in mainland China, which is why smugglers have been illegally bringing in the highly-popular smartphones into the country. One of these mules have been caught smuggling in 94 units of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S.
According to CNN Beijing, the mule caught Shenzhen, Futian crossing inspectors’ attention, when he looked like he was carrying a heavy load despite looking like he was travelling light. The inspectors didn’t find anything suspicious in the man’s two plastic shopping bags, but when he was made to pass through a metal detector, the alarm went off and the iPhones strapped to his body with duct tape were discovered.
The 94 iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S units have an estimated value of over 300,000 yuan (around £32,000).
According to Shenzhen customs officials, 18 mules have been caught strapping electronics to their bodies since December. These products include 282 iPhones.
