Previous reports have claimed that the Apple iPhone 6S and the Apple iPhone 6S Plus will be slightly thicker compared to their predecessors – the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. If new leaked photos are to be believed, it seems that these claims are true.
A tad thicker
The photos you see above were sent to MacRumors by from an anonymous source. They show a unit of the unannounced iPhone 6S, which is said to be “assembled from parts” being measured by a caliper. It reveals that the iPhone 6S measures 138.19 x 67.68 x 7.08 mm, which means that it will be 0.2 mm thicker than the iPhone 6. These measurements also reveal that the next iPhone will be slightly taller than its predecessor, which measures 138.1 x 67.0 x 6.9 mm. As for the iPhone 6S Plus, it is said that the phablet-sized iPhone will be 7.3 mm-thin, which means that it will be also 0.2 mm thicker than the iPhone 6 Plus. Note that 0.2 mm is almost impossible to notice, which means you can still use cases made for the previous iPhones on the upcoming iPhones.
So why are the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus slightly thicker compared to the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus? We’re guessing that it has to do with the tougher aluminium reportedly used on the new iPhones. Additionally, the use of Force Touch technology (the ability to recognise soft taps from hard taps) seems to have forced Apple to make its new iPhones slightly thicker.
We’ve learned from previous reports that Apple will not change the storage options with their next iPhones. This means that the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus will still be available in 16 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB storage options. We’ve also learned that Apple will reportedly use stronger aluminium on the two, specifically 7,000 series aluminium. This should prevent the two from getting easily bent when put in skinny jeans pockets. Although this year’s iPhones will look exactly the same as last year’s iPhones, the two will come with a number of upgrades internally. These include a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera (an upgrade from the 8-megapixel rear-facing camera of last year’s iPhones), a 5-megapixel front-facing camera (an upgrade from the 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera of last year’s iPhones), Force Touch screens, a triple-core A9 chip, and 2 GB of RAM.
Of course, since we can’t confirm if the photos really show the unannounced iPhone 6S, take them with a pinch of salt.
