The hack will not put your personal data at risk, but it will allow hackers to spam users with the equal sign. This renders the phones unusable, since it will always reset once it receives the equal sign. It can also terminate a call once an SMS with an equal sign is received.

Before anything else, note that not all smartphones with MediaTek CPUs are vulnerable to this SMS attack. To see if your phone is affected by this issue, send yourself an SMS with an equal sign.

Witty, a French-speaking blog, has the solution to this problem. All you have to do is download an alternative messaging app that can receive SMS and not use the default messaging app of your phone.
