This week, all eyes were on Microsoft’s newly unveiled high-end devices – the Microsoft Lumia 950 smartphone and the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL phablet. But did you know that the software giant also lifted the lid on its new entry-level handset – the Microsoft Lumia 550? It only took Microsoft less than 10 seconds to lift the lid on the device, and there’s no official product page for the device at the time of writing. Fortunately, we do have a few details about the device, which we have included below.
Say hello to the Microsoft Lumia 550
Microsoft plans to bring Windows 10 to the masses by launching the Lumia 550 handset. The affordable device will be available in December and will set buyers back around £90. We’re sure the entry-level device will sell like hotcakes, as affordable Windows-powered devices always tend to dominate in the entry-level market.
According to Microsoft, the Lumia 550 sports a 4.7-inch screen with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels (HD), which works out to a pixel density of 315 ppi. In the photography department, the device sports a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with LED flash and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera for snapping selfies and video chat. It offers 8 GB of internal storage, which is clearly not enough to store your apps, photos, and videos. For more storage options, it does come with a microSD card slot. Under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 SoC, which is a quad-core processor with each core clocked at 1.1 GHz, coupled with 1 GB of RAM. It does support 4G LTE connectivity. To keep the lights on, it comes with a 2,100 mAh battery that does support quick charging. It measures 136.1 x 67.8 x 9.9 mm and weighs in at 141 g. It runs Windows 10 Mobile out of the box.
Although these specs fail to impress, they do offer more bang for the buck compared to most entry-level handsets available in the market. Like we said, affordable Windows-powered handsets tend to do well in entry-level markets and seem to attract buyers who are looking for a starter smartphone. This said, we’re expecting the device to sell well, just like other 500 series Lumia handsets.
